Luckily setting up a new Switch isn’t too difficult and we’ll take you through the necessary steps below. You can also watch our unboxing video above which includes the entire setup process for the original console – which is even simpler for the Switch Lite. How to set up Nintendo Switch
For starters, get everything out of the box and ready to go.
Step 1
Plug the AC adapter into the wall and plug the USB-C cable into the bottom of the Switch console – just like you would to charge a smartphone.
Step 2
If you have the regular Switch then attach the Joy-Con controllers to the console and switch it on using the power button on the top. If you have the more recent Switch Lite the controllers are already built-in, so you just have to hit the power button.
Step 3
Follow the on-screen instructions which will guide you through various settings and how to use the Switch in its various modes. These steps include choosing a language, connecting to the internet, creating a profile, linking a Nintendo account and connecting to a TV – though this last only applies to the original Switch. For some, you can choose to do them later.
Step 4
Once you’ve completed the setup process, you’ll see the main home screen. Now you can insert a game cartridge (or download games) and get playing in any of the Switch modes.
